The initiator and bearer of Studio Samorog is a visual artist and an anthropologist BREDA PIVK. She holds a degree in cultural anthropology, ethnology, and sociology of culture from the Faculty of Arts, Ljubljana. In the framework of Mundo scholarship she attended lectures at ULC, SOAS, and Goldsmith’s College in London. She has spent a lot of time abroad where she carried out a series of field studies and residencies in Asia, Africa, and Central America. Most of her academic research was oriented toward art of non-European cultures, but later her focus moved to active integration of contemporary art and science. Since 2006 she has been involved in the field of intermedia art in the framework of Studio Samorog –  a studio for Cosmology, Myth, and Visual Arts.

 

Studio  for  Cosmology,  Myth  and  Visual Arts

 

Studio Samorog  (Unicorn)  has been conceived as research and experimental space, intended for the conceptualization and creative expression of topics dealing with the fundamental anthropological question of the origin and existence of the human race on Earth. The main purpose of such questioning is not searching for any final (let alone absolute) truth, but the activation of consciousness and surpassing the self-evident hypnosis of everyday survival which, under disguise of cheap glamour of capitalism and quasi-identities, pushes human beings into increasingly alienated and numb realities that are mostly free of any authentic creativity. Studio Samorog is therefore, first and foremost, all about creative inspiration, freedom of thinking, feeling and expression, in the widest possible range of the existing options.

 

The  conceptual  framework  of  creative  activities:

  • cosmologically and mythologically oriented exploration of multidimensional nature  of human consciousness that uses different areas of science and art as an  expressive medium
  • integration of various historical archives that directly affect the experience and problems of modern civilization
  • study of the existing parallel realities, and presentation of the models that reveal their implicit  connection
  • demystification of non-functional social paradigms
  • exploration of mythical symbols and themes that are present in our environment (e.g. dragons)
  • integration of scientific evidence which confirms an assumption that the Earth is a living genetic library
  • exploration of classic and contemporary artistic production as a source of symbolic information
  • introduction of digital gallery and visual storytelling
  • art and musical events, performances,  visualization accomplished through digital media, photography, painting, collage, words, sound …
  • connecting different people through various socializing and entertaining events, creativity and modes of expression on the basis of their common interests and creative motives

And all this for the pure joy of life! We do not live only in order to survive, but to experience, learn, and be enriched by everything that surrounds us.

After 10 years of creative activities in factory Rog, painting and visual art has become and remained a central activity of Studio Samorog, along with various social, musical and other events. It is  a concrete example of innovation and realization of creative ideas that were, at the very beginning, established in the context of a conceptual framework. In 2016 Studio Samorog, (due to external pressures and inner attack, a violent take over of the studio house from social center rog) withdrew from  factory Rog and ventured  forward into the unknown…
